When you buy jewelry, any jewelry, from the most expensive fine Angel Alchemy Jewelry to inexpensive costume jewelry, you buy it because it is beautiful. The shine of the metal and the luster and fire of the gemstones appeal to your aesthetic sense of beauty, depending on what you can afford.

The better the jewelry, the longer you’ll want to wear it, perhaps for the rest of your life, and the longer you’ll want it to shine like new, although some metals and finishes do acquire a warm patina over time. What you don’t want, however, are scratched or gouged settings and dull gemstones. Accidents can happen, but all too often jewelry is damaged by carelessness or by not taking the proper time to care for it.

  • Protecting the jewelry

First, consider what you do when you wear jewelry. Rings are a good example of how common sense can prevent loss.
More rings are likely to be lost through carelessness than any other type of jewelry because they are more likely to be taken off when worn than pins or necklaces, bracelets or even earrings. So if you wear rings, keep them with you at all times or be as careful with them as you are with your money and credit cards.

Men and women tend to look at rings differently, by the way.
  • Storing and cleaning jewelry

What do you do with your jewelry when you take it off, and that means all jewelry, not just rings? First, you should have a good and safe place for it. Second, this place should protect the jewelry not only from loss, but also from damage.

Cleaning Bath. Mix a mild detergent and warm water in a small bowl or cup. Immerse the jewelry and brush the pieces with an eyebrow brush. Rinse the jewelry under warm running water and place it in a tea strainer or gauze cloth to be safe. Pat it dry with a lint-free cloth. Do not use for soft gemstones or for strung jewelry such as ivory or pearls.
  • Soak in cold water. In a cup or bowl, mix half cold water and half household ammonia. Place the jewelry in it and let it soak for 30 minutes. Do not let it soak overnight or for an extended period of time. After 30 minutes, remove the jewelry and carefully clean the front and back of the setting with an eyebrow brush, if necessary, before swishing the jewelry in the solution again and draining it on a paper towel. Do not use soft gemstones or jewelry that is strung, such as ivory or pearls.
  • Quick dip. Commercial jewelry cleaners usually use the quick dip method. Since there are different cleaners, read the instructions carefully and follow them closely. Do not use a cleaner on jewelry that is not specifically mentioned unless you ask a jeweler first.
  • Ultrasonic cleaners. There are several of these small devices on the market. The principle is to clean jewelry soaked in a metal bowl with water and detergent, using high-frequency turbulence. Here too you should pay attention

Read and follow the instructions with extreme care and do not use the device for jewelry that is not specifically mentioned. Not all jewelers believe that these devices are safe for diamonds as well. Therefore, before purchasing such a device, be sure to check with your jeweler and seek their advice.

These are the commonly used methods. Certain metals and gemstones require special care. The methods described below are safe for the metals in question and will not harm most gemstones. Note, however, that some gemstones require special care. If you have any doubts about cleaning jewelry, consult your jeweler.

1) Copper

Like silver, copper tarnishes in the presence of moisture and sulfur. However, in most cases, a lacquer is baked on to prevent tarnishing of the jewelry. To clean copper, use any commercial cleaning agent that is indicated as safe for copper. Do not use ammonia, which can attack copper.

2) Gold

The lower the karat number, the more gold will discolor due to the higher percentage of base metals in the alloy. Mild soap, water and ammonia can easily remove the discoloration.

One theory is that you can prevent gold from leaving black marks on your skin by spraying the gold with hairspray. In reality, by doing this, you are only adding a substance that will tarnish the gold even more. The best way to avoid skin discoloration is to keep the gold clean. Never use hairspray on gold with gemstones.
