In Summary

Netflix is prepping for June with some of the most amazing movies and shows coming on the streaming app. The service has some old and some new content for subscribers to keep you occupied. To help you keep track of these releases, we have listed some of the best content below.

The Umbrella Academy (Season 3)

The Umbrella Academy returns this June for its third season and it can’t come too soon. We first met the Hargreeves in season one, when the adopted superhero siblings reunite to get to the bottom of their father’s mysterious death. The first season was set in the present day, where Fives has returned from the future into the body of his younger self. He reveals to his brothers and sisters that an apocalypse is imminent. The second season finds the siblings scattered across different times in the early 1960s where once again, they have to try and stop another apocalypse. The third season will find them in an alternate universe where the Hargreeves siblings will no doubt have to work together to save themselves.

Léon: The Professional

Directed and written by Luc Besson, Léon: The Professional is an action thriller starring Jean Reno, a young Natalie Portman, and Gary Oldman. 12-year-old Mathilda returns from a shopping trip to find that corrupt DEA agents have been to her apartment and killed her family. Worried, she asks Leon to offer her shelter, who reluctantly agrees. Mathilda quickly figures out that he is a hitman and asks to be taught how to be one too. The unusual relationship between the young girl and the hitman is interesting, to say the least, and Natalie Portman offers a breakout performance.

The Amazing Spider-Man

Of the number of Spiderman movies released over the past few years, one that you can catch on Netflix stars, is Andrew Garfield. Garfield stars as the snarky superhero who gets bit by a radioactive spider and learns that he has superpowers. Peter Parker doesn’t just have to deal with the villains lurking around his city but also has to find out how to deal with a girl he has feelings for. While Garfield’s Spiderman did not receive the best reviews at the time, the movie has gained newfound adoration since the release of Spiderman: No Way Home.

Titanic

If there was ever a classic that should be watched on repeat, it’s Titanic. James Cameron includes historical and fictionalized aspects in the movie as the story follows the sinking of the ship. The movie stars Kate Winslet and Leonard DiCaprio in the leading roles of Rose and Jack. Rose is a young girl who is engaged to a wealthy man to help resolve the family’s financial issues. Jack is a poor artist who wins a ticket to the Titanic and develops a friendship with Rose that quickly turns into a passionate relationship brought to an end by the well, you know.

The DUFF

The DUFF follows the story of Bianca, one of a group of three friends, who learns from Wesley that she is the Designate Ugly Fat Friend of the group. Upon learning this from the Captain of the football team, Wesley offers Bianca his help to transform her, because she learns that no one in school cares for her. In turn, Bianca offers Wesley help to pass a class he is failing. Bianca unfriends her friends but learns that they were genuine all along. Mae Whitman, who plays Bianca, is funny, charming, and offers a great performance that is bound to keep you entertained.

Troy

Troy is an epic historical movie that stars an A-list cast that includes Brad Pitt, a very young Orlando Bloom, and Eric Bana, all at the pinnacle of their careers. The movie is loosely based on Homer’s Iliad which narrates a decade-long Trojan war. The movie received criticism for whitewashing the characters and being unfaithful to the Iliad. The movie may not offer much in the way of a story with emotional depth but is an entertaining spectacle, to say the least.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

The fourth installment of the Mission Impossible franchise once again brought Tom Cruise back in his role as IMF agent Ethan Hunt. Stuck in a Moscow prison, Ethan finds a way to escape with the help of an agent and another prisoner. After his escape, he is tasked with gathering more information on the ‘Cobalt’ who is on his way to purchasing the Russian nuclear launch codes. This part received much more positive reviews after the disappointing reviews of Mission Impossible III. The stylish, fast-paced movie is perfect if you want to be entertained.

Dear John

Nicholas Sparks has written several romance novels, which are regularly transformed into movies. Dear John was no exception and was released in 2010, starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried. Savannah, Seyfried, meets John, and Tatum, who meet each other in Charleston and develop a relationship over the next two weeks. John leaves, but the two promise to continue their relationship through letters. The two are forced to spend years apart instead of just months as they had through, but continue to write letters to each other. Eventually, Savannah breaks up with John and tells him she has feelings for another man. While most romantic movies are considered cliché, we think you should give this one a chance.
